Gamification Lab: sustainability in the North Pole
Pedro Silveira Martins.
The students of Sociological Methods Applied to IR accepted a challenge proposed by the professor Pedro Martins on Sustainability, Climate Change and geopolitics in the Arctic.
Their work presents Mission Arganzuela as a fictional but realistic case study about the Arctic conflict between economic interests and environmental protection. It explains how melting ice in the Arctic opens new shipping routes and drilling opportunities for large oil companies, while at the same time severely threatening local ecosystems and ancestral lands. The poster highlights the tension between governments, corporations focused on profit, and Indigenous communities demanding a voice in decisions that directly affect their survival and territory.
The project also emphasizes the ecological and cultural consequences of unchecked industrial exploitation. It points to biodiversity loss, climate change acceleration, and the destruction of traditional hunting grounds, which endangers food security and cultural continuity for Indigenous populations. By including a philosophical quote and ending with possible solutions, such as renewable energy, stronger environmental policies, and international cooperation, the work invites reflection on responsibility and urges collective action before the damage becomes irreversible.
